Lincoln Wheelers annually hold a series of circuit races plus a circuit race championship. All events are held on the Lincolnshire Showground. Races at the Showground are held on the tarmac perimeter roadways to fit in with events taking place at the Showground. For dates see the Racing Calendar. Any pace is welcome - not just the "fast boys". The more riders there are, the more enjoyable the races are.
The format for races at the Showground will normally includes the usual five lap scratch race (everyone starts together) and 5 lap handicap race (staggered start, based upon times in the scratch event, with the slower riders going first and the faster ones later). The handicap race generally results in several different mini races within the overall race. The number of laps and race format may be altered on the night to suit weather and light levels.
It doesn't matter how fast or slow you are, it is an enjoyable event for riders of all ages and abilities and it is good training for time trialling as well as road racing and riding in a group. Come along and see for yourself! The cost is £2 and this goes towards the hire of the circuit and insurance. Only 1st claim club members are allowed to participate. Races are held under TLI Rules, so you need a TLI licence (annual, no day licences are available now), which can be applied for here. This is the same licence as required to take part in club time trials.
Lincolnshire Road Race League (TLI)
The Lincolnshire Handicap Road Race league is promoted under TLI regulations and is a low cost local alternative to British Cyling races. It comprises an event every other Wednesday ran by clubs (including the Lincoln Wheelers) throughout Lincolnshire in the summer. This series is an excellent introduction for anyone wanting to try road racing. You need to join the TLI if you want to ride (see TLI Cycling) but this is the same licence as required to take part in the Lincoln Wheelers club time trials.
The Road Race League is handicapped in groups with the aim of bringing all groups to the finish at about the same time. Like Circuit Racing, it is very good training. Each group has a lead vehicle to provide a safe road environment for the group.
This year the Lincoln Wheeler’s Rider of the Season points will be awarded on the best 2 of 3 TLI events (events to be confirmed, see calendar) but if you want to give road racing a serious try , you should consider taking part in the annual league with 8 road races on various circuits around Lincolnshire. If you plan to race an event, please arrive in good time for the 7.00pm start.
Details of the current TLI race calendar can be found here.
